POS Receipt printer cannot create a virtual COM port

Legacy KB ID: 5253

Question

I have installed my POS Receipt Printer but when I turn it on nothing happens.  When I look at the Device Manage > Ports (COM & LPT) I see a “?” where I expect to see the virtual COM port for my Receipt Printer.

Answer

This error may appear when a previous USB to serial converter driver failed to install correctly or there may be a conflict with the USB connection that the receipt printer is plugged into.

Solution 1

1.    Turn off the receipt printer

2.    Unplug the receipt printer from the existing USB slot

3.    Restart your PC

4.    Plug the receipt printer into a different USB slot.

5.    Turn on the receipt printer. The driver should attempt to install again.
